Introduction to our purple colored Bougainvillea. This cheerful addition to the patio garden is attractive to butterflies and bees and will hopefully become a screen plant on the west wall.

Bougainvillea Brasiliensis (Bougainvillea Spectabilis var. Brasiliensis) is the light purple variety of the three bougies currently in the patio garden. If all goes according to plan this plant should become a colorful screen between us and our neighbors to the west. Things are not going to plan right now though, a heavy infestation of aphids preceded my overzealous removal of the infected bracts (all of them). It’s not the same without those lovely colors but I’m expecting a full recovery into the spring as the temperature rises and sunlight hours increase.

Like the other bougies, this plant is drought tolerant and fast growing to as tall as 20′. There is a smaller variety of this plant and I don’t know yet which one we have. It is a sun lover, the more the better and should be happiest with a minimum 5 hours a day.
